WPXI-TV has named Mike Oliveira as news director. Formerly the managing editor at the NBC affiliate, Mr. Oliveira will supervise the daily news operation and news staff.

"Mike has been with us since 2005 and has had a dramatic impact on our product and people," said Ray Cater, station vice-president and general manager.

Mr. Oliveira, 31, said the purpose of WPXI's news organization is reaching beyond television, changing with the needs of viewers.

"People expect the news in different ways now, via MMS [multimedia messaging service] to people's smart phones; people are using mobile web, and more people are using us on Facebook. But what they expect us to do is cover their community and do it respectfully, to tell them the great stories. That's never going to change, and that's why I know we have a future," Mr. Oliveira said.

Mr. Oliveira came to Channel 11 News as its executive producer. Prior to that, he was a producer at WHDH in Boston and also worked at WTVH in Syracuse, New York. He is a graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

He replaces Mike Goldrick, who left WPXI to become vice-president of news at NBC4 (WRC-TV) in Washington, D.C.
