Mike LaPoint, WPXI part ways

Mike LaPoint, who joined WPXI as chief meteorologist in January 2007 and then got repeatedly bumped down from more desirable time slots to less prominent newscasts, left the station earlier this month. His contract was not renewed.
The writing was on the wall that this probably would happen after he was shifted to weekends last April. Prior to that, he'd been moved from his chief position on weekday evening newscasts -- after the station re-hired Julie Bologna, who has since left -- to weekday mornings.
"We met with Mike [in] late summer and told him we wouldn't likely be renewing his contract at the end of the year," explained WPXI general manager Ray Carter in an email. "He began a quiet search at that point and as I understand it, is in the running for a couple of different weather jobs. He was a terrific employee in terms of work ethic and how he carried himself. We will miss his energetic attitude and real love of weather forecasting."
Mr. Carter said WPXI is searching for a replacement for Mr. LaPoint.
Mr. LaPoint couldn't be reached for comment.
