A new role for Christina Aguilera: 'voice of reason'
Over her 11-year career, Christina Aguilera has played the Mousketeer, teen genie, the dirrty girl and the cabaret swing gal.
In an NBC show premiering Tuesday, Mark Burnett has a new, unlikely role for her: "voice of reason."
"We have three very irreverent naughty boys who are all coaches," the producer says of Cee-Lo, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton on the vocal competition show "The Voice." "And thank God for Christina who always brings it back to the business and what's going on. And she is absolutely the rock and the voice of reason."
When and where: Premieres at 9 p.m. Tuesday on NBC.
Starring: Christina Aguilera, Cee-Lo, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.
"I think I've taken on sort of the mama role at times," she chimes in during the media teleconference, "because these are boys that, you know, speak their mind and sometimes get off track of what we're there to do."
In "The Voice," the four stars each begin with eight singers they will coach through a series of competitive duets. Eventually, they will guide four singers each into the live rounds, where they will vie for America's vote. For the final episode, each coach will be down to one artist.
The first round is based on blind auditions, with the judges' backs turned, so the singer's appearance doesn't even come into play.
"We take it back to real music, and we take it back to a time before there was any such thing as, say, an MTV or any way to show an artist through video or through Internet or through packaging," Ms. Aguilera says. "It's definitely about going back to old music, where you wanted to buy it or you wanted to listen to it on the radio purely from just what sounds good on your ears -- something that moves you."
Apparently, what you won't get are those early audition embarrassments that are so popular and sometimes controversial on "American Idol."
"What I love about this show, too, is that it's all based on positivity," Ms. Aguilera says. "We're not trying to tear anybody down for, you know, a TV moment. This is all about bringing up amazing talent because each and every person that gets up on that stage can sing and has a voice."
