A maddening group of 'Girls' on HBO

HBO's "Girls" (9 tonight) made a terrible first impression but the show got better once viewers learned to accept the characters as immature people who are prone to making deeply stupid decisions.

It's not always clear how "Girls" wants viewers to feel about its characters -- Are these 20-something women to be mocked? Pitied? Reviled? -- but through the first season it was possible to come to care about them and their first world problems.

'Girls'

When: 9 tonight, HBO.

Starring: Lena Dunham.

As season two begins, Hannah (series creator/writer Lena Dunham) is living with gay friend/former boyfriend, Elijah (Andrew Rannells, "The New Normal"); Marnie (Allison Williams) is still smarting over her breakup with Charlie (Chris Abbott); Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) is reveling in her anger at Ray (Alex Karpovsky) and Jessa (Jemima Kirke) settles into married life after her quickie wedding.

But it doesn't take many episodes before change is afoot as it constantly is in these pathetic characters' turbulent lives. Adam (Adam Driver) is recovering from his accident and Hannah tries to find someone who will pay her to write, only to allow herself to be led down an ugly path.

Whether a viewer finds "Girls" entertaining will probably depend on several factors, including an appreciation for absurdity, self-absorption and a particular niche within modern youth culture. Frankly, my tolerance for the show varies on a weekly basis but it is different enough to be refreshing even when it's maddening.
