In the season premiere of Fox's "Bones" (9 tonight, WPGH), Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI special agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) are solidly coupled. Not without complications, but without question.

Brennan, aka "Bones," is pregnant with Booth's child, but she wants the couple to maintain separate homes. Booth wants them to live together. And Bones' best friend, Angela (Michaela Conlin), agrees that for the sake of the child, they need to live in the same home. The season premiere resolves one aspect of the where-should-they-live question while raising others.

Although putting two characters with long-simmering sexual tension together can sometimes doom a TV show, the producers of "Bones" say they're striving to keep Bones and Booth rooted in what made fans love them.

'Bones'

When: 8 tonight, Fox.

"We just continue to write Booth and Brennan the same, which is as two completely disparate characters who agree on very little on the surface," said executive producer Stephen Nathan in a teleconference with reporters last week. "Only now they're dealing with a pregnancy and a relationship."

Executive producer Hart Hanson acknowledged the writers talked about and maybe even worried about putting the characters together, wondering, what replaces sexual tension?

"We talked about it at great length, and then the gods intervened and Emily came and said, 'I'm pregnant,' " Mr. Hanson said. "At that moment we knew what replaced sexual tension was an actual human being."

Due to Ms. Deschanel's real-life pregnancy there will be fewer "Bones" episodes this season -- 17 instead of 22 or 24 -- with the spinoff series "Finder" taking over the show's time slot at some point during the 2011-12 TV season. Six episodes of "Bones" have been filmed so far with production resuming in early December.

Now that Bones and Booth are together, fans want to see when the couple will actually tie the knot. They're advised not to hold their breath because Booth is waiting for Brennan to propose. Mr. Hanson teased that union will come "when Booth and Brennan catch most of the killers."
