Winners selected in Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest

Winners were chosen Monday night in the Pittsburgh Public Theater's 18th annual Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest, which saw nearly 1,000 students, grades 4-12, strutting their stuff during the competition.
The judges were all Public Theater staff and actors in the company's current production of "As You Like It."
The 26 monologues and multi-character scenes that advanced to Monday's Showcase of Finalists at the Public's O'Reilly Theater were:
Scene, grades 8-12: Winners: Matthew Ruppert, Ben Jackson, Micah Ruppert (Penn Hills, home schooled). Additional finalists were: Nikki Davis, Daren Kossar (Shaler High School); Markella Williams, Isaac Miller (Lincoln Park Charter); Maria Ignelzi, Armand Ignelzi (Aquinas Academy); Keith Backensto, Elisha Carleton, Grayson Quay (Beaver County Christian).
Monologue, grades 8-12: Tied for first: Sara Williams (City Charter High School) and Tal Kroser (Pittsburgh CAPA). Additional finalists were: Olivia Gill (Carson Middle School); Marin Exler (Carlynton Middle School); Jonathan Veres (Thomas Jefferson High School); Larry McKay (Allderdice High School); Laura McCarthy (North Allegheny High School); Callee Bradley (Winchester Thurston); Christa Lerch (Lincoln Park Charter); Marco Zappala (Quaker Valley High School); Evan Stiger (Freedom Area High School); Katherine Heidengren (Beaver County Christian); Lucy Sedor-Franzak (Bethel Park High School); Jordana Rosenfeld (CAPA); Kathryn Griffin (Canon McMillan High School).
Scene, grades 4-7: Winners: Emily Appel,, Dominic Skeele (Slippery Rock Middle School). Additional finalists were: Lexi Feldman, Caroline McDonough (Boyce Middle School); Anna Porter, Elizabeth Stater (Blackburn Study Center); Heather Walter, Tyler Schmidt (North Hills Junior High School).
Monologue, grades 4-7: Winner: Emily Bassett (Winchester Thurston). Additional finalists were Elliot Pullen (home schooled) and Charlotte Bush (Hope Academy).
