The Post-Gazette's 95th ShowPlane heads to Broadway May 2-6. It features four new entries in Broadway's annual best musical comedy sweepstakes. As is now often the case, three adapt movie plots and one taps a gusher of classic songs.
* "Nice Work If You Can Get It" is a new musical by Joe DiPietro ("Memphis," "All Shook Up") about a tough female bootlegger and a rich playboy, with songs by George and Ira Gershwin. Directed by Pittsburgh's own Kathleen Marshall (three Tonys), it has an A-list cast led by Matthew Broderick, Kelli O'Hara, Judy Kaye and Estelle Parsons.
* Disney's "Newsies, the Musical," based on the 1992 movie, is a warmhearted tale about a turn-of-the-20th-century newsboys strike against the N.Y. press barons. It tried out in New Jersey last fall, winning strong reviews. The score is by Alan Menken ("Little Shop of Horrors," "Beauty and the Beast," eight Oscars), book by Harvey Fierstein ("La Cage aux Folles," "Torch Song Trilogy") and direction by North Hills' own Jeff Calhoun ("Grease," "Big River").
* "Leap of Faith," starring Raul Esparza as a con man preacher and a score by that same Alan Menken, is based on the movie starring Steve Martin and Debra Winger, with a plot similar to that of "The Rainmaker."
* "Ghost, the Musical" is a post-mortem love story based on the romantic 1990 Patrick Swayze movie. The director is Oscar/Tony winner Matthew Warchus ("Art," "God of Carnage").
The ShowPlane group stays at the Millennium Broadway Hotel, just off Times Square. Included is a welcoming dinner and a discussion about the shows over post-show drinks with Post-Gazette senior theater critic Chris Rawson.
There is also an optional farewell dinner and a private tour of an interesting corner of Manhattan, complete with professional guide and lunch.
Experienced escorts from Pittsburgh accompany the group and offer guidance for additional theater, dining and touring.
Included in the package are the four shows, four nights at the hotel, dinner, discussion, round-trip airfare from Pittsburgh, transfers between the New York airport and hotel, gratuities and taxes. The basic tour price is $1,898 per person based on two people sharing a double room. The single supplement is $589.
A deposit of $500 per person is required to hold your reservation; status will be confirmed upon receipt of deposit and reservation request form. All payments are to be made to Gulliver's Travels Inc., 460 S. Graham St., Pittsburgh PA 15232-1210.
