The University of Pittsburgh's Indian classical dance team recently won first place in a national competition. Nrityamala, founded in 2006 and the only such team in the Pittsburgh area, was named champion Feb. 26 at Laasya 2011, held at the University of Maryland.
Winning the collegiate competition means the Pitt team will host next year's Laasya.
The dancers choreograph their own pieces to selected music. Each year, eight teams are selected to perform following review of their audition video. Shobhitha Ravi, a senior, has been captain of Nrityamala for the past two years. The other members are: Swarna Sunkara, Santhiya Mahilkanthan, Indrani Kar, Pranathi Kaki, Sudha Mokkapati, Sushma Kola, Shipra Kumar, Anita Rao.
