Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre's 2009 season gets under way in May on a high note.
It starts with "Rock 'n' Roll," Tom Stoppard's tribute to playwright and politician Vaclav Havel. PICT producing artistic director Andrew S. Paul will direct the production, which stars British actor Sam Redford in his first performance with PICT, Sam Tsoutsouvas, Helena Ruoti and Martin Giles. The production runs May 7-30.
PICT is also presenting several events in conjunction with "Rock 'n' Roll," including panel discussions on politics and art in the former Czechoslovakia and on communism and socialism. Its Storytellers Series will feature readings of five of Havel's comedies.
Next is Joe Orton's "What the Butler Saw," with Simon Bradbury in his PICT directorial debut (June 11-27).
John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play "Doubt," directed by Jeffrey Cordell, stars Kate Young and David Whalen (July 9-Aug. 1).
"The History Boys" has its first professional production here. Paul directs this comedy about students trying to get admitted to Oxford and Cambridge (Aug. 6-22).
The season ends with stage adaptations of two literary classics: Fyodor Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment," adapted by Marilyn Campbell and Curt Columbus (Sept. 10-26), and "Jane Eyre," which was adapted for the stage and directed by Alan Bennett (Dec. 3-20).
All performances are at the Henry Heymann Theatre and the Charity Randall Theatre at the University of Pittsburgh.
