Bricolage has silly fun with 'Cult Classic Movies'

"Cult Classic Movies" is the final installment of season No. 4 for Bricolage's fun Midnight Radio series, which this year drew on topics chosen by the audience. The folks who fill the seats did a good job, challenging the troupe to explore spies, haunted Pittsburgh and finally movies, along with producing old-time radio in a live theater setting and having a grand time doing it. The result is sometimes clever, sometimes silly, vulgar fun, showcasing talented local actors Sheila McKenna, Patrick Jordan, Amy Landis, Jason McCune and Skyler Sullivan, who with Mr. Jordan also is on Foley sound-effects duty.
For "Cult Classics," writers Gayle Parzerski, Brad Stephenson and Joseph Lyons picked on the truly awful films "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" and "Godzilla vs. Mothra" and re-dubbed them a la Woody Allen's "What's Up, Tiger Lily?" Among the commercial spoofs, an ad for a school for vengeance and VCR repair was a hoot; the fake breaking news segment fun, as always.
Ange Vesco added a cooking challenge-segment and, on Saturday night, musical guest Josh Verbanets (of indie band Meeting of Important People) dueted with Scott Spilakers on two horror-humor songs. Deana Muro kept things lively with musical accompaniment throughout.
A merry time was had by players and patrons -- including Kim Richards, Sister of "Sister's Christmas Catechism," who sat back and enjoyed after her own Saturday show at City Theatre.
On the heels of the huge accomplishment that was "STRATA" and the harrowing "The Dutchman," it's nice to see Bricolage sending off 2012 with a few laughs.
