Pittsburgh Opera takes classical approach next season

Caution: Sharp implements ahead next Pittsburgh Opera season! A shaving kit, a dagger, an executioner's ax and a guillotine all play central roles in the company's 2010-11 season: "The Barber of Seville," "Lucia di Lammermoor," "Turandot" and "Dialogues of the Carmelites."
The company's general director, Christopher Hahn, expects the casts to be sharp as well, led by a bevy of up-and-coming artists.
"We are rediscovering these great old classics with the freshness of young singers," he said. "I have been seeking out people who have not necessarily been around the block but still have tremendous stage presences."
Many of the young singers will make their local debuts next season, and that includes Brazilian mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack, who will sing Rosina in the madcap comic "Barber," which opens the season in October.
"Her coloratura is amazing, but she is just now beginning to emerge," says Mr. Hahn. She will star opposite baritone Matthew Worth as Figaro, and two singers with exceptional stage presence at character acting return to the Benedum stage: Kevin Glavin as Dr. Bartolo and Paolo Pecchioli as Basilio. "These are all stage creatures, and they will light up the stage," says Mr. Hahn.
Almaviva will be announced later. Gregory Keller is stage director for the period-appropriate production from Minnesota Opera.
Performances are at the Benedum Center, Downtown, and are conducted by music director Antony Walker unless otherwise noted. Season subscriptions start at $42 and go on sale Friday; single tickets start at $10. Call 412-456-6666 or visit www.pittsburghopera.org.
