Pittsburgh Camerata: Old World to New

After the violence of the Spanish conquests of the New World came a different invasion: that of culture, including classical music. Manuscripts from the cathedrals of Mexico and South America attest to the vibrant musical culture in which accomplished composers -- immigrant and native-born -- were prolific in the Western styles.
Led by artistic director Rebecca Rollett, the Pittsburgh Camerata will delve into this lesser-known repertoire -- Baroque and Renaissance choral music by Juan Gutierrez de Padilla and Antonio de Salazar -- in three concerts.
But that's just the first half. After the break, the ensemble explores the impact of the British church music traditions on North American composers, including contemporary writers such as Howard Hanson, Stephen Paulus and Leo Sowerby.
Ambitious program? Yes, but that's the norm for this local professional choir that will sing at 8 p.m. Saturday in Sixth Presbyterian Church, Squirrel Hill. The program repeats at 8 p.m. March 8 in Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church and 8 p.m. March 9 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Highland Park.
