Antonee wonders 'Who You Are'
• Antonee (First Class) is an English-born Jamaican, but he's a Pittsburgh product, as well, as his family settled in Wilkinsburg when it moved to the States.
For the past five years, the son of reggae artist Militant Barry has been the lively toaster in the English Beat, which plays here more and more frequently.
This week, he breaks out with a smooth reggae-pop single, "Who You Are," that was produced and arranged along with Wayne Lothian, the Beat bassist who also played in Special Beat, General Public and The Pogues with Joe Strummer. It also features Grammy-winning composer/conductor Paul Buckmaster on strings and Lynval Golding from The Specials on guitar.
Antonee calls it an adult contemporary reggae song in the vein of UB40 or Beres Hammond. It's the first single from an EP in the making. For info, go to www.antonee.net.
'Ramble' on
• Have you heard about the Thunderbird Ramble?
The semi-regular event, in the spirit of the late Levon Helm's Midnight Rambles in Woodstock, takes place at 9 Friday night at the Lawrenceville club, organized by Rob James of the Clarks and WDVE's Randy Baumann.
They are joined in a house band by guitarist Brett Zorich (Triggers), bassist Chad Sipes (Chad Sipes Stereo), drummer Joey Wasolousky (Corbin/Hanner Band), Danny Rectenwald (Bastard Bearded Irishmen), singer Nina Sainato, saxophonist Phil Brontz (Bill Toms Band) and trumpeter Joe Herndon (Billy Price Band).
This week they welcome special guests Josh Verbanets (Meeting of Important People), Adam Rousseau (Triggers), Jay Wiley (The Hawkeyes) and Bill Toms.
"The tunes are all drawn from the Band/Dylan/Last Waltz canon," Mr. Baumann says, "and basically, it's a pretty fun bar gig for drinking beer and gettin' down a bit."
