Biggest nights at the Grammys
1981
Golden-voiced newcomer Christopher Cross became the only artist to sweep the general field, winning Record of the Year ("Sailing"), Album of the Year ("Christopher Cross"), Song of the Year ("Sailing") and Best New Artist. Those were the first and last Grammys he ever won.
1984
The Jackson 5 never won any Grammys and Michael had only won one small one (R&B Vocal for "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough"). Then came "Thriller." He took home eight awards, including Album of the Year, and "Record of the Year" for "Beat It." In the Song of the Year category, voters were divided between "Beat It" and "Billie Jean," opening the door for Sting's "Every Breath You Take" to win.
1993
In his long Hall of Fame career -- spanning the Yardbirds, Cream, Derek and the Dominos -- guitar god Eric Clapton hadn't won anything. All he had to do was unplug. He won six and swept the top three categories, winning Album of the Year for his "Unplugged" and Song and Record of the Year for "Tears in Heaven," a teary ballad about the death of his 4-year-old son.
1999
Having broken away from the Fugees, Lauryn Hill became the first female artist to win five awards in one night, taking Album of the Year for "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" and Best New Artist. Fans are still waiting for her second proper solo album.
2000
Santana had won a Rock Instrumental Grammy in 1988. Then, in 1999, Santana released its star-studded "Supernatural" album, led by the single "Smooth," sung by Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas. It won eight Grammys, the most ever for a group in one night, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Rock Album. Carlos Santana has won one Grammy since, for Pop Collaboration with Michelle Branch in 2003.
2003
Jazzy pop newcomer Norah Jones won five and sort of swept the top categories, winning Album of the Year ("Come Away with Me"), Best New Artist and Record of the Year ("Don't Know Why"). The catch is "Don't Know Why," which won Song of the Year, was written by Jesse Harris, so he got that award.
2010
Beyonce was no stranger to the Grammys, having won five in 2003, none in a major category. In 2010, the pop diva won six, the most for a female artist in one night, including Song of the Year for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" (which won three). In a weird split, though, Kings of Leon won Record of the Year for "Use Somebody" and Taylor Swift won Album of the Year over Beyonce's "I Am ... Sasha Fierce," so it didn't seem like Beyonce owned the night.
