"Based on a story by Philip K. Dick" has become a standard big-screen credit since 1982, when Ridley Scott adapted the writer's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" into "Blade Runner." Victoria Stewart's "800 Words: The Transmigration of Philip K. Dick" is an adaptation of the prolific writer's life after he experiences life-changing visions. John Gresh plays the title role for Caravan Theatre at Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company, 937 Liberty Ave., Downtown, Thursdays through Sundays through Sept. 30. A conversation with renowned architectural photographer Iwan Baan will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Carnegie Museum of Art as the opening event for the exhibition "White Cube, Green Maze: New Art Landscapes" (free). A reception will follow. Exhibition galleries will be open until 9 p.m. The six sites featured in the exhibition exemplify a new type of museum that fuses inventive architecture and landscape design with radical conceptual and installation art. The Ligonier Highland Games in Idlewild Park put Scottish and Celtic culture front and center. Among activities and events are sheep-herding demos and competitions for dancers and musicians. "What Do We Laugh At?" is the topic of a gallery talk with Brigitte Martin and Rob Rogers at 4 p.m. at the Society for Contemporary Craft, 2100 Smallman St., Strip District ($5 at the door). Ms. Martin is guest curator of the current exhibition, "Humor in Craft," and of a 2012 book by the same title (hardcover, color illustrated, $50). She will sign books afterward. Mr. Rogers is a nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist who joined the Post-Gazette in 1993 after nine years as The Pittsburgh Press staff cartoonist. The show continues through Oct. 27. The Pittsburgh Concert Society presents winners of its 2012 major audition competition in a recital. The concert, at 2 p.m. at Kresge Recital Hall at Carnegie Mellon University in Oakland, puts the piano duo of Ganna Kovalevska and Yuting Zhou and violinist Hilary Gamble on stage. $10-$15; 412-279-2970.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra opens its season at Heinz Hall, Downtown, with baritone Thomas Hampson singing Strauss' Orchestral Songs, PSO principal horn player William Caballero soloing in Strauss' Horn Concerto No. 1, and music director Manfred Honeck leading both and Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World."
