The Santa Barbara, Calif., band Toad the Wet Sprocket took its name from a Monty Python sketch making fun of strange band names. Very post-modern. The '90s alt-rock band was not a grunge act and had several hits such as "Walk on the Water," "All I Want" and "Fall Down." It re-formed in 2010 and is touring in support of its new material. It performs a free concert at 7:30 p.m. at Hartwood Acres, Hampton.
Peter Yarrow of the legendary folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary will be at the Penguin Bookshop, 420 Beaver St., Sewickley, promoting his new illustrated children's book, "It's Raining, It's Pouring" at 1 p.m. This event is a mini concert and book signing. Information: 412-741-3838.
The 20th century saw a boom in operas willing to take on tough and real subjects. Carlisle Floyd's "Susannah" of 1955, a disturbing tale of an innocent young woman in Tennessee who is shunned and then raped, is one of the most potent. Undercroft Opera, a company dedicated to giving local singers a chance to take on major roles, presents it this weekend. Patrick Brannan directs and Walter Morales conducts. The New Olde Bank Theatre has left Verona for a new home at Smithfield United Church of Christ, 620 Smithfield St., Downtown. The company will christen its new digs with "Reckless," a dark comedy by Craig Lucas, with Sean Michael O'Donnell directing. Performances are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday through Aug. 11. The John McIntire Dangerously Live Comedy Talk Show ponders The Antisocial Network at Cabaret Theater, 655 Penn Ave., Downtown, at 10:30 p.m. If inane and insane had a baby, it would be Facebook. In this comedic examination, Mr. McIntire and company will explore annoying social networkers and annoying humans in general. Panelists include Pittsburgh City Councilman Bill Peduto, comedian Gab Bonesso, author Robert Isenberg and "social network ninja" Jia Ji.
