Only one of the Pittsburgh-area theaters where "Top Gun" opened on May 16, 1986, survives, but star Tom Cruise lived up to Post-Gazette predictions:
"There hasn't been such a star-making role for a male performer since John Travolta primped, posed and pranced his way to the top in 'Saturday Night Fever.' ...
" 'Top Gun' should be a huge personal success for Cruise and a box-office bonanza, too. It is a sleek, efficient, high-tech product like the jet planes that Cruise shares the screen with.
"It is also undeniably entertaining, in a superficial, audience-pleasing way."
In the movie directed by the late Tony Scott, Mr. Cruise plays a hotshot pilot nicknamed Maverick; Anthony Edwards is his radar intercept officer, Goose; Kelly McGillis, a flight school instructor and romantic interest; Tom Skerritt, the best pilot in the business; and Val Kilmer as Mr. Cruise's rival.
It returns to theaters today in 3-D, having made nearly $354 million worldwide in 1986, turned Mr. Cruise into a sex symbol, boosted U.S. Navy recruitment, won an Oscar for best original song ("Take My Breath Away") and earned three other nominations. It is rated PG for mild language.
