'Groundhog' movies: Readers weigh in via Facebook
Share with others:
John Pfab: "Slapshot" ... not just for being filmed in Johnstown. I've been a hockey fan most of my life, and this always brings out a laugh.
Marge Connor Stout: "The Breakfast Club." There isn't a better '80s movie out there! A good representation of the various cliques in the '80s high school environment!!
Jackie Belczyk: "The Princess Bride." I've loved it ever since I was a little girl. It has everything: pirates, sword fights, adventure and even true love.
Joan Swanson: "To Kill a Mockingbird." It's a powerful drama, set in Depression-era Alabama. A story of racial tensions and injustice in the South. Love that it's told from a child's perspective.
Jackie Willey: "Bridesmaids" is the only movie I watch over and over again. I like a movie that brings tears to my eyes, and "Bridesmaids" does that by making me laugh so hard.
Barbara Repko: "Gone With the Wind" -- for the same reason I read the book every year over and over (since age 16) and have a large stock of "Gone With the Wind" collectibles. It's the greatest story ever written in the U.S., and nothing else will ever come close.
Erica Peters: "Hot Fuzz." Simon Pegg is a comedic genius, and multiple viewings of this movie reveal small details previously missed, all of which collectively create a hilarious world.
Janet Hill: "The Way We Were" because even though you love someone and know it won't work, you can still move forward without them and love at the same time. Acceptance, I guess.
Amy Eltringham: "Titanic" ... No exaggeration, I have seen it well over 100 times! It is a great love story and proves money can't buy you love!
Susan Kellen: "Hannah and Her Sisters." It's funny, touching, intelligent, comforting and beautiful. I feel this way about most of Woody Allen's films.
Karen Miller Barrett: "Young Frankenstein"! I think this has to be the funniest movie I ever saw. I have the DVD and VHS tape. I watch anytime it's on TV! I just love the humor Mel Brooks brings to the screen, and the actors were superb!
George McWarren Napper: "Stranger Than Fiction." It's just such a brilliant story, beautifully shot and acted, and one of the only movies where Will Ferrell gets to show his true range as an actor. Every time I watch it, I get something new and interesting out of it.
Michelle Groff: "Groundhog Day" I love how it is similar in how everyday people's lives are the same, but he keeps improving by catching the child who falls from the tree, changing the flat tire for the old women, feeding the sick old man, answering all of the "Jeopardy" questions ... then trying to off himself in every way and kidnapping the ground hog ... lol!!!
If you want to see "Groundhog Day" -- again -- on the big screen, it is showing in two theaters tonight: 8 at the AMC-Loews, Waterfront (www.amctheatres.com/Waterfront/), and at 7 and 9:15 at the Hollywood Theater, Dormont (www.thehollywooddormont.org).
