In the event you find yourself in Los Angeles later this month, there are a series of "Oscar Week" events that are either free or just $5 each.

On Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m., two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird will host "Shorts! The 2011 Animated and Live Action Short Film Nominees." The director of "The Incredibles" and "Ratatouille" also recently struck box-office gold with the live-action "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol."

Nominated shorts will be shown, and there will be an onstage discussion with the filmmakers, schedules permitting. As with other events, it will be held at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater, 8949 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills.

On Feb. 22, Oscar winner Michael Moore will host "Docs! The 2011 Documentary Short Subject and Documentary Feature Nominees." That event, also at 7:30 p.m., will feature clips and a talk with the nominees.

Actor Patton Oswalt, who spoke for Remy in "Ratatouille" and co-starred in "Young Adult," will host an animated feature symposium at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23. Nominees will chat about their creative process and development of their films and present clips illustrating their techniques.

At 10 a.m. Feb. 25, Oscar-winning producer Mark Johnson ("Rain Man") will host a session with the directors of the foreign-language film nominees. They will talk about their work along with related topics such as art, politics and the challenges of their profession.

At 2:30 p.m. Feb. 25, a symposium will celebrate the nominated achievements in the makeup category and offer film clips, photos, models and onstage discussions about hair and makeup.

Tickets are available starting today at www.oscars.org (click on Events & Exhibitions) and by mail. Tickets to the events focusing on the shorts, documentaries and animated features are $5 for the public and $3 for Academy members and students with valid IDs.

Saturday events are free. Doors open one hour before the event. All seating is unreserved.
