A documentary tracking Jeff Goldblum's return to Pittsburgh to star in "The Music Man" will debut during the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival, which runs April 25 to May 7 in New York. Once known as "The Untitled Jeff Goldblum Project," it's now simply called "Pittsburgh."
Directed by Kyle LaBrache and Chris Bradley and co-produced by Goldblum, "Pittsburgh" follows the actor as he puts his Hollywood life on hold to star alongside his young fiancee in the Pittsburgh CLO production. The festival says the filmmakers "tread a surprisingly elegant line between genuine documentary and outright self-parody in this deliciously deadpan comedy."
In addition to Goldblum, a native of West Homestead, and fiancee Catherine Wreford, these famous faces turn up: Ed Begley Jr. and Illeana Douglas, who were also in the CLO show, and Moby. No word on if or when the movie, one of 60 works in the festival, might play Pittsburgh.
DOWN AND DIRTY
Now that the Oscar hoopla is over, the Oaks Theater is going in the other direction. All the way down, where the worst picture resides.
The Oakmont theater is showing "Dirty Love," which picked up three Razzies for worst picture, plus actress and screenplay for Jenny McCarthy, at 9:30 tonight and tomorrow only. McCarthy stars as a photographer bent on revenge against her cheating ex-boyfriend.
Since the movie never opened in Pittsburgh, we will share how The New York Times ended its review: "Even by the standards of its bottom-feeding genre, 'Dirty Love' clings to the gutter like a rat in garbage. Ms. McCarthy compensates for her utter lack of comedic skills by making clown faces and emitting earsplitting omigod's after each humiliation."
So bad it's good? It will cost you $1 admission, plus an additional charge based on rolling a die, to find out. The movie is being screened as an unofficial fund-raiser for the Oaks' "Moonlit Matinees" summer program.
If your tastes run toward the more conventional, the Oaks is screening "Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont," starring Joan Plowright, and "Mrs. Henderson Presents," with Oscar nominee Judi Dench, today through Thursday.
"Mrs. Palfrey" shows daily at 4:45 p.m., while "Mrs. Henderson" screens at 7 nightly and also plays at 2:30 p.m. today, tomorrow, Sunday and Monday.
You can pay single admission of $5 before 6 p.m. or $7 after, with discounts for senior citizens, children and students, while double-feature admission is $9. Go to www.theoakstheater.com for more information.
