"Slap Shot" is back, on screen and on the book shelves.
In hard-drinking hockey coach and player Reggie Dunlop, the late great Paul Newman was the perfect fit in a macho comedic role for the ages, leading a band of misfits and miscreants to change the fortunes of a down-and-out minor-league hockey team. Filmed in Johnstown and Western Pennsylvania more than 30 years ago, the film made cult heroes of the unruly Hanson brothers in their only film appearance.
A new 35mm print of "Slap Shot" is at Pittsburgh Filmmakers' Regent Square Theater Jan. 1-4, and Dave Hanson's recent book with Ross Bernstein, "Slap Shot Original: The Man, the Foil, the Legend" (Triumph Books, $24.95), recounts the three Hanson brothers' wild hockey ride. The October release has forewords by Bob Costas and Gordie Howe.
