In horror circles, all eyes are on ...

No, not "The Hills Have Eyes 2," though its $10 million take last weekend is somewhat "Eye"-opening given the critical disdain. (Remember, diehards that we are, horror is pretty much a critic-proof genre.)

No, we're talking about "Grindhouse," the flick with a cast of directors better than its cast of characters. That's saying something when you consider actors the likes of Kurt Russell, Rosario Dawson, Nicolas Cage and an uncredited Bruce Willis. But it's top guns Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez along with pop guns Rob Zombie, Eli Roth and Edgar Wright who bring the testosterone to this imaginative piece of genre-twisting movie mayhem.

By the way, "flick" isn't the right term. It's a double-feature, actually, with "trailers" (compliments of Zombie, Roth and Wright) thrown into the mix -- a salute to '70s exploitation movies. And while we'll know soon enough how the critics and ticket-buyers react (it opens next Friday), it's already got my vote for best tease of the year. The Independent Film Channel runs commercials all the time, and I can't take my eyes off of Rose McGowan's prosthetic leg -- a machine gun.

You'll want to look for Pittsburgh's Tom Savini in "Grindhouse." And given that we're the zombie capital of the world, thanks to his mentor, George Romero, you should get a kick out of the storyline in which the walking dead are called "sickos."

Suffice to say it's a "House" full of surprises (not to mention horrors), but to reveal much more is to spoil the fun.

You early birds might want to visit the official site -- grindhousemovie.net. -- where you'll find trailers and, by way of some of the coolest clicks in cyberspace, a whole lot more.
