The Post-Gazette reviews movies from a family perspective:
'The Avengers'

Rated: PG-13.

Suitable for: 8 and up (there are some subtitles, and the film is two hours, 15 minutes and loud).

What you should know: Marvel comic book superheroes Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow form an uneasy alliance as The Avengers. They stop bickering just long enough to battle an army of alien invaders, led by Thor's megalomaniac brother Loki. Shown in 2-D, 3-D and 3-D IMAX.

Language: A few damns, one SOB and assorted milder words.

Sexual situations: There is a kiss and suggestive talk between Tony Stark and Pepper Potts. A character is naked but strategically covered up.

Violence/scary situations: Sci-fi violence from beginning to end, from martial arts battles to psychological abuse to all-out war. Lethal weapons include Hawkeye's bow and arrow, a deadly missile and serpent-like alien battleships, not to mention Hulk Rage. New York City becomes a battlefield between an alien army and the Avengers, with massive destruction of life and property. Cruel Loki uses a scepter to enslave people and plays head games when cornered. Spoiler alert: A character we've grown to admire meets a brutal end.

Alcohol and drug use: Champagne is sipped, a character makes himself a drink at a home bar, and a joke is made about a bag of weed.
