This weekend, award-winning author Katherine Paterson will be in Pittsburgh for two literary events.

Known for her novels "Bridge to Terabithia" and "The Great Gilly Hopkins," which both won the Newbery Medal, Ms. Paterson is a major figure in children's literature.

Illustrators E.B. Lewis and Marla Frazee join Ms. Paterson today at 9 a.m. for the 46th annual Fall Festival of Children's Books in the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Lecture Hall. This event allows teachers, librarians and university students to meet popular children's authors and illustrators.

Tess Riesmeyer, chairwoman of the festival planning committee, said the event's goal "is to ensure that children benefit from the professional development received by their teachers."

She added, "Imagine having a teacher who can share with you stories of how an artist works, how a book is created, and how an artist and writer work together to create what just might become your new favorite book."

Fall Festival 2010 has taken a different form with new sponsors and a shorter program.

Ms. Riesmeyer said, "Fall Festival has a long history of bringing the very best in children's literature to our community," which includes Ms. Paterson. Her "characters are far from perfect and thus believable and very realistic. She doesn't shy away from difficult subjects in her writing and she never talks down to her readers."

Ms. Paterson will be in good company this morning with Coretta Scott King award winner E.B. Lewis, who illustrated "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," as well as the Randolph Caldecott Medal winner, Marla Freeze, illustrator of "All the World."

Ms. Paterson will speak Sunday at 2 p.m at the Black, White & Read All Over Children's Series at the library lecture hall. This is a family event that will introduce children and their parents to Ms. Paterson, "an ambassador for young people's literature."
