It's summer in the city, and arts organizations are making the most of the outdoor season. Following is a look at programming made even better by trees, sunshine, an occasional firefly flash or a moon overhead.

The Frick Art & Historical Center

"First Fridays at the Frick," a musical performance series, continues at 7 p.m. on the Great Lawn in front of Clayton in Point Breeze.

This Friday features cabaret singer Daphne Alderson and her ensemble, including pianist Douglas Levine and guitarist/banjo player John Marcinizyn. Ms. Alderson's repertoire embraces Edith Pilaf and Judy Garland, 1960s folk-rock and early Broadway.

On Aug. 5, the band Marley's Ghost delivers a mix of Appalachian folk songs, traditional Celtic music, honky-tonk and reggae.

The season closes Sept. 2 with the St. Petersburg String Quartet, a harbinger of the House of Faberge exhibition that will open in October.

The suggested donation is $5; children are free. Picnic dinners are available for purchase from The Cafe at the Frick.

The most charming summer event being offered in town, croquet on the Frick lawn followed by champagne and light hors d'oeuvres, is, sadly, filled. However, this match-up of sentimental game and vintage setting received such a good response that chances are it will return next year.

Recently added to the programming, with available space, is "Photographing Clayton," the opportunity to take pictures on the first floor of the Frick home. While indoors, this is also an activity for the summer when the sun pours long and low through the windows. To protect the house's artifacts, flash is not permitted, and photographs must be made by natural light. Two sessions, from 6 to 7 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m., will be held Aug. 4. The fee is $70, members $50 (pre-registration required).

Mattress Factory

"Birdmusician" Michael Pestel, contemporary sound artist extraordinaire, has been back in Pittsburgh conducting experimental movement and music workshops in conjunction with the National Aviary, the Allegheny Commons Initiative and the Mattress Factory. Three programs related to the project take place at the Mattress Factory, 500 Sampsonia Way, North Side, early next month.
