Several artists to speak about their works

John Carson, the Regina Gouger Miller Department head of the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University, will speak on "Modern Perspectives" at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, 221 N. Main St., Greensburg. Mr. Carson will present his response to the historic artworks in the exhibition "They Practice What They Teach: Artist Faculty of Carnegie Institute of Technology," 60 objects created by the influential teachers at what is now Carnegie Mellon. Bill Boichdel -- artist, writer, professor and proprietor of Copacetic Comics in Polish Hill -- will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday at the ToonSeum, 945 Liberty Ave., Downtown. His topic will include the relationship between religion and superheroes addressed as both mythological construct and commercial project, possessing historical, moral and ethical dimensions. The third in the Word of God exhibition series at The Andy Warhol Museum will open with a talk at 2 p.m. Saturday by artist Chitra Ganesh followed by a reception. The work exhibited was influenced by a comic the artist read as a youngster. The comic was designed to teach Indian children about their culture and history and about Hindu myths. "Late in Life," artworks by Mary Georg, will open with an artist reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday in the Jenner Gallery at the Mountain Playhouse, 7690 Somerset Pike, Boswell (15531). Mrs. Georg began the paintings after the death of her husband six years ago. She will be 71 years old in the fall, and this is her first public exhibition.
