The artists have been announced for the first Pittsburgh Biennial to span four major city arts institutions and five venues since the exhibition was initiated in 1994 at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.
The 2011 Biennial will open in two phases in June and September. The launch will be a reception from 5:30 to 9 p.m. June 10 at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and from 8 to 11 p.m. at Pittsburgh Filmmakers. Carnegie Museum of Art will follow June 17. The second phase comprises Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University, opening Sept. 16, and The Andy Warhol Museum, Sept. 17.
The artists and cooperatives are mainly drawn from the region and most out-of-towners have Pittsburgh roots or connections. They were chosen by Adam Welch, curator, PCA/PF, for the center; Dan Byers, associate curator of contemporary art, for the Carnegie; Astria Suparak, director and curator, for the Miller; Eric Shiner, acting director and curator, for The Warhol; and by all four for Filmmakers.
