Thomas Espy, a prominent resident of Upper St. Clair Township, was 50 when he enlisted in the army on July 4, 1861. He was appointed captain and given command of Company H, 62nd Pennsylvania Volunteers. In less than a year, Espy was mortally wounded at Gains Mills, Va. The date was June 27, 1862. He was taken prisoner and died of his wounds. Espy's remains were placed in an unmarked grave.
