Art Notes: Several exhibits to open locally; N.Y., Niagara beckon

"South Hills Seen II," paintings of the local scene by members of South Arts, will open with an artists' reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Galleria in Mt. Lebanon. The exhibition continues through Sept. 3. Free and public. (412-831-8156)
An exhibition by the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators featuring artists from its new book of drawings and libations, "Drawing Under the Influence," will open with a reception from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Gallerie Chiz, 5831 Ellsworth Ave., Shadyside. "Art Flash!," a one-night exhibition of works by local photographers, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at 2315 Wharton St., South Side, in the offices of Commonwealth Press. "Art Flash!" bills itself as "anti-juried art and pro-community, friends and good times" and plans similar events dependent upon the success of this inaugural show. Exhibiting photographers are Sue Abramson, Nicole DeSantis, Sarah Devine, Kristi Jan Hoover and Richard Kelly. Free and public. (814-248-9123)
"Paul Binai: Fifty-Year Retrospective" opens with a gala preview reception Sept. 10 at The University Museum, Sutton Hall, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. "Eine Kleine Kit Kat Klub: A Taste of Jazz-Age Berlin" begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails, followed by dining (German cuisine), music and entertainment, German cabaret style, in the hall's Blue Room ($125). Cocktail attire, black tie optional. Reservations are required by Sept. 1 at 724-357-2397. The gala and raffle of a diamond and pearl pin/pendant will benefit the museum.

Road trippers to Niagara Falls will have the opportunity to view the iconic natural phenomenon from artists' perspectives beginning Sept. 1, when a new permanent exhibition opens at the satellite gallery of the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University. "300 Years of Niagara Falls Imagery" comprises approximately 15 paintings, prints and photographs from the museum's collection of historic Niagara Falls works that date from 1698 to 1837. Two Pittsburgh artists are exhibiting in the hot Chelsea gallery district in New York this fall.
