Six architects honored for Gateway T station design

A team of six local architects has received a silver medal for the design of the new Gateway T station Downtown.
This is first time in four years that a silver medal has been awarded in the competition for members of the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Institute of Architects. A jury of Detroit architects called the station "a wonderful piece of civic architecture and a recognition of how integrated and important public transit is to the identity of a city. .... The choice of materials celebrates the steel and glass heritage of the city and the expression of the materials celebrates the technology and innovation that make Pittsburgh Pittsburgh. Great job of exploding the box."
The architects who designed the T station as part of the North Shore Connector project are Gary Carlough, Jonathan Golli, Matt Fineout, Rob Pfaffmann, Carl Bergamini and Erik Hokanson. Their client was the Port Authority of Allegheny County. The contractor was Whiting-Turner.
The award was presented Thursday evening at a gala hosted by AIA-Pittsburgh at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's Education Center. Elisabeth Lisa Schroeder, founder and chief executive officer of Riverlife, received the Gold Medal Award, which honors a community leader who has made a significant contribution to the architectural profession.
