Steelers beat Jets, 27-10, in home opener

The Steelers bounced back from their season-opening loss to do what they always seem to do, win their home-opener.

They made it 10 straight home-opening wins at Heinz Field by overwhelming the New York Jets 27-10 today.

The victory left them in a three-way tie for first place in the AFC North with Baltimore and Cincinnati.

Ben Roethlisberger threw touchdown passes to Heath Miller and Mike Wallace, Shaun Suisham kicked two field goals and Isaac Redman ran for another score.


The Steelers scored touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters while shutting out the Jets in the second half. They put the game away with a 14-play, 75-yard fourth quarter drive that consumed 10 minutes, 13 seconds. Redman ended that drive with a two-yard touchdown run with 3:34 to go in the game.

The Steelers broke into a 10-point lead with consecutive touchdown drives, one at the end of the first half and their opening series of the second half.

The Steelers stretched their lead to 20-10 over the Jets in the third quarter.

Roethlisberger threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Miller late in the second quarter to give the Steelers a 13-10 halftime lead.


Roethlisberger and Mike Wallace then hooked up on their first deep pass of the season, a 37-yarder with 8:44 left in the third quarter. The pass came on third-and-16 as Wallace beat Antonio Cromartie by taking him inside in the right side of the end zone to catch Roethlisberger's pass.

It was the only score of the third quarter.

The Steelers drove 80 yards for their only touchdown of the first half. Emmanuel Sanders had two important plays, sarting with a 10-yard reception on third-and-nine to keep the drive moving. Later, he caught a short slant and turned it into a 19-yard gain that became a 32-yarder after a penalty was tacked on when safety LaRon Landry hit him out of bounds.

That gave the Steelers a first down at the 13. On third down at the seven, Roethlisberger stepped up under pressure and completed a 6-yard pass to Jerricho Cotchery over the middle.


Roethlisberger faked a handoff to Isaac Redman on the next play and hit Miller in the left back corner of the end zone for the touchdown.

The Steelers and the Jets traded field goals to end the first two drives of the second quarter. Suisham connected from 45 yards for the Steelers on the first play of the quarter. Nick Folk converted from 38 on the following drive to put the Jets ahead 10-6.

The Jets led 7-3 after one quarter.

Shaun Suisham gave the Steelers a 3-0 lead when he kicked a 45-yard field goal to end the game's first drive. However, it marked a failure in the red zone by the Steelers, who had a second down at the 19 before they were pushed back.

The Jets responded wih a drive that ended when Santonio Holmes caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Mark Sanchez. Steelers - homepage - breaking
