The Steelers' aching defense took another blow yesterday when safety Mike Logan was placed on injured reserve.
Logan, who plays an important part of the Steelers' dime passing defense, had surgery on his right knee yesterday afternoon to repair at least one ligament injury. Erik Totten, a 5-foot-9, 194-pound rookie safety, was signed off the practice squad to take Logan's place.
The Steelers' played the Cleveland Browns Sunday without starting cornerback Chad Scott, who missed the past two games with a broken right hand. It's possible Scott might be available to play Saturday in Tennessee. Defensive back Chidi Iwuoma's right knee was injured Sunday against the Browns. He is doubtful for the game against the Titans.
There may be some good news forthcoming on linebacker Kendrell Bell, however. Bell is expected to be listed as questionable today with a sprained ankle that was reinjured late in the game Sunday.
Bell said the ankle swelled yesterday, which was not unexpected. He said he should know by tomorrow whether he can play. He took a pain injection Sunday morning, then played what he called his best game. He led the Steelers with eight solo tackles.
"You get into the flow of the game and you forget all of that, you don't even remember anything about the injury," said Bell, who wore a boot on his left ankle. "There were points when we got down when it was pretty bad, I could have said let's hold it for next season. I could have easily done that, but that's not the mind-set I had."
