Steelers Steelers Report: 1/15/02

Tuesday, January 15, 2002

Compiled by Ed Bouchette

LOOKING AHEAD

Ravens (11-6) at Steelers (13-3), 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Heinz Field. TV: KDKA. Radio: WDVE-FM (102.5) and WBGG-AM (970).

NOTEBOOK

Not many radio announcers climb into the ring for a professional fight. But, then, not many are Craig Wolfley, the former Steelers offensive lineman. Wolfley, who does several radio shows on sports-talk station WBGG-AM (970), has signed to fight former Tough Man champion Butterbean Feb. 2 in Gulfport, Miss. Butterbean, whose real name is Eric Esch, was supposed to fight former Chicago Bears defensive tackle William "The Refrigerator" Perry in a four-round exhibition at the Grand Casino Hotel as part of Super Bowl weekend. But Perry withdrew from the fight for undisclosed medical reasons, and Wolfley, who trains and spars with amateur boxers at his Bridgeville gym, was chosen as his replacement.

Wolfley was picked after he beat former offensive lineman Jesse Sapolu in the NFL Tough Man Competition three weeks ago in Las Vegas.

WR Plaxico Burress drove to Cleveland yesterday morning to pay a $50 fine for a Dec. 24 infraction for having an open beer in his car. He said he was relieved to have it behind him but was not pleased he had to appear in person for what amounts to a traffic citation.

"I don't have a reason to go up there anymore," Burress said. "I learned my lesson. I'm going to stay out of there until we go to Paul Brown Stadium next year."

Paul Brown Stadium is in Cincinnati, though, and not Cleveland.

The Steelers practiced for 90 minutes yesterday afternoon, a rare Monday practice for them.

"This was about the most fast-paced practice I've ever been associated with," S Lee Flowers said. "It's January 14th and we're still running around here like it's September 14th. Guys are excited."
