Tennessee center Bruce Matthews, in his 19th NFL season, is so old he once blocked Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Lambert.
"My rookie year -- I think he had a bad toe and they had switched from the four down to the 3-4 [defense]. I remember thinking, 'Man, I can't believe I'm on the same field with Jack Lambert.' I think I hit him on a screen one time and I felt bad.
"It was an honor. I'm proud to say that I was on the same football field as Jack Lambert."
Matthews, 40, has been on a lot of fields for a long time. He was a first-round draft pick of the Houston Oilers in 1983. He has played in more games than any other offensive lineman in NFL history, 285, which ranks second overall behind George Blanda among nonkickers. He has never missed a game with an injury and made 13 Pro Bowls at two different positions, guard and center.
Titans Coach Jeff Fisher estimated he has played 18,500 snaps in the NFL.
"I'm not ready to commit to saying that this is my last year, though I am considering that," Matthews said. "There's a part of me that doesn't want to give it up."
