The Big Picture: Cast your Steelers broadcast ballot

Monday, November 02, 1998

By Chuck Finder, Post-Gazette Sports Writer

The Marconi heirloom known as the Steelers' radio rights has attracted a short line of prospective buyers. Like, uh, two.

KDKA-AM and WDVE-FM are vying to become the broadcast package's new proprietor starting with the 1999 season. Talk vs. rock. CBS vs. the Chancellor chain. Fred Honsberger and John Cigna vs. Scott Paulsen and Jim Krenn, a darn skippy rumble that screams Cage Match.

The mere fact WEAE-AM isn't involved constitutes a sweeping change, in that the Steelers' rights had been hermetically sealed in a jar and locked in a safe at the Ardmore Boulevard station since the Roosevelt administration.

Teddy, not Franklin.

So change is coming. But how much?

The prospective buyers have looked over the lucrative property and contemplated new windows here, a new voice there.

Which brings us to today's election.

In our democracy of the dial, we offer you the right to vote for the radio lineup of your choice. Vote early. Vote often. Vote over the Internet, at our www.post-gazette.com. Or by e-mail at: cfinder@post-gazette.com. Or by snail mail in care of The Big Picture, 34 Boulevard of the Allies, Pittsburgh, Pa., 15230. Or by hermetically sealed jar. Just vote.

The Steelers, it should be noted, retain the power to pick and choose their announcers, and they're quite content with the three fellas in the booth right now, thank you very much.

But weren't you going to pick those three, anyway?

Cast your ballot on that issue, and many others below, and we'll announce the totals in this space next Monday.

What team do you want to hear announcing the Steelers?

(a.) Bill Hillgrove, Myron Cope and Tunch Ilkin.

(b.) Paulsen, Krenn and Cope.

(c.) Thor Tolo, Cope and The Guy in the Parking Lot.

(d.) Stan Savran, Cope and Ilkin.

(e.) Anybody else.

What pregame and postgame team do you want to hear?

(a.) The PG's Gerry Dulac, Steelers Digest's Bob Labriola and Craig Bingham.

(b.) Stan 'n' Guy [Junker], love the shows.

(c.) Tolo and a cast of KDKA radio/TV thousands.

(d.) Hillgrove, Cope and Ilkin.

(e.) Somebody else (you can expound on this).

How much pregame and postgame do you want?

(a.) Starting four hours before, ending four hours after.

(b.) Four before, three after.

(c.) Three before, three after.

(d.) Three before, two after.

(e.) Starting Thursday, ending Wednesday.

If you could change something in the broadcast booth, you would:

(a.) Remove Cope.

(b.) Remove Hillgrove.

(c.) Remove Ilkin

(d.) Remove the TV network team.

(e.) Add somebody else (you'd better expound on this).

When you listen to games, you tune in:

(a.) AM.

(b.) FM.

(c.) And turn down the TV sound.

In your Steelers broadcast, you would prefer:

(a.) Less frivolity, more football.

(b.) More frivolity, less football.

(c.) To keep it the way it is.

Which doodad would you prefer:

(a.) More sound from the field.

(b.) Sideline reporter.

(c.) Live postgame news conferences.

Essay question: While we're at it, what do you think of ABC's "Monday Night Football"?

Must be 10 words or less. Demerits for profanity.
