Riverhounds settle for 3-3 tie

Special to the Post-Gazette

CINCINNATI -- Despite having a man advantage in the second overtime period, the Riverhounds couldn't get the winning goal past substitute goalkeeper Jake Witkowski and settled for a 3-3 tie with the Cincinnati Riverhawks.

"We knew we needed to pick up 10 points this weekend, but we only picked up three," said Riverhounds Coach John Kowalski. "If we had done this in June, it would have been a good result, but tying games now is like losing them."

The Riverhounds (10-13-3) dominated the early play, taking a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on a goal by Joenal Castma assisted by Tenywa "T-Bone" Bonseu.

T-Bone threaded a pass to a streaking Castma, who put the ball past Cincinnati goalkeeper Cleg Sinelnikov. The Riverhounds found the goal again in the 23rd minute when David Flavius score for a 2-0 lead. Flavius beat two defenders, then pushed the ball around Sinelnikov for his 11th goal of the season.

The Riverhawks (2-21-3) cut the lead just before halftime on a goal by Philippe Godoy. He made his way through the penalty area, beating the Riverhounds' defenders before beating goalkeeper Randy Dedini with a blast that bounced off the post before finding its way into the goal.

Cincinnati tied the score with a goal by Teodor Matis in the 59th minute. Matis intercepted a ball around midfield and was off alone on the goal. Substitute goalkeeper Doug Petras charged 40 yards out of his goal to play the ball but was beaten by Matis, who put the ball into an empty net.

The Riverhawks and Riverhounds traded goals in a one-minute span near the end of regulation. Richard Roettker put in a rebound past Petras in the 82nd minute to give the Riverhawks a short-lived lead. Then, in the 83rd minute, substitute Lee Tschantret hit a powerful shot from 20 yards out past Sinelnikov to tie the score, 3-3.

The two overtime periods were marred by fouls on both sides. Both teams were reduced to 10 players in the first overtime due to red cards received by Tschantret and Roettker. In the second overtime, Riverhawks defender Eric Descombs received his second yellow card of the game and was ejected, dropping Cincinnati to nine players.

Riverhounds midfielder Gary DePalma was not in the lineup. He was serving a one-game suspension for accumulation of yellow cards.

The Riverhounds return to Bethel Park Stadium Saturday for the last home game of the season against the Richmond Kickers.
