RICHMOND -- The outcome almost was inevitable.
The Riverhounds had lost five consecutive road games and the Richmond Kickers had won seven home games in a row going into their A-League soccer game last night.
So it was no surprise that both streaks continued as the Kickers scored twice in the second half to nip the Riverhounds, 2-1, before a crowd of 1,663 at the University of Richmond City Stadium.
The Kickers (8-4-0, 32 points) and the Riverhounds (4-6-1, 18 points) traded scoring chances in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the net.
But in the 65th minute, Kickers midfielder Tony Williams, a second-half substitute, scored off a low cross from forward Dwayne Rosario. The Kickers struck again in the 85th minute, when forward Kwaku Adu-Gymafi took a pass from Darryl Gomez, sped off on a breakaway and beat Riverhounds goalkeeper Randy Dedini to make it 2-0.
The Riverhounds narrowed the gap to 2-1 in extra time when forward Phil Karn scored off an Ezzy Ihekoronye assist.
Ihekoronye made a run deep into Richmond territory and sent a pass to Karn, who struck the ball past Richmond goalkeeper Mike McGinty.
But the Riverhounds couldn't get the equalizer in the waning minutes of extra time.
Riverhounds assistant coach Paul Child took over the coaching duties for the Riverhounds while head coach John Kowalski served a one game suspension for receiving a red card June 10 in Atlanta.
Child said the Riverhounds generated good scoring chances but could not capitalize. And he conceded that playing five games in the past nine days took a toll.
The Riverhounds return to Richmond July 1. The Riverhounds' next game will be at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Park when they face the MLS Columbus Crew in an exhibition game.
They will play their next A-League game Saturday night against the Raleigh Capital Express.
