Unbeaten Lynx top Riverhounds, 2-0

Monday, June 05, 2000

Special to the Post-Gazette

TORONTO -- The Toronto Lynx remained undefeated with a 2-0 victory over the Riverhounds last night.

The Lynx (5-0-1) increased their lead over the Rochester Raging Rhinos in the Northeast Division. The Riverhounds (4-2-1), who committed 18 fouls, are in the fourth place in the Atlantic Division.

"You have to give [Toronto] credit," Coach John Kowalski said. "They played well tactically and individually and moved the ball well. Since our first game, they have improved."

The Lynx took the early lead on a goal by forward Francisco Dos Santos, Toronto's leading scorer, in the 16th minute. Dos Santos launched his shot after a 30-yard lead pass from midfielder Nikola Vignjevic. Goalkeeper Randy Dedini's deflected the shot but could not make the save.

In the 62nd minute, Riverhounds defenders Tenywa "T-Bone" Bonseu and Nick Terlecky were caught flatfooted when midfielder Brian Ashton sprinted 40 yards on a counterattack to beat them to the ball, which forward Lloyd Barker lofted into the Riverhounds' zone. Ashton's turnaround kick sailed past Dedini into the back of the net.

The Riverhounds spent the final 25 minutes creating several scoring chances.

Midfielders Adam Fedoruk and Jair Vasquez and Terlecky and Bonseu all had shots that were just wide of the Toronto goal.

"Our inability to score in a packed defense was troublesome," Kowal ski said.

"We were too slow in transition from defense to attacking. We allowed them to set up in a sort of bunker-like defense after they scored their first goal."

Although the Riverhounds lost, they still have a chance to be the host of a second-round Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup game June 14. The tournament seeding and draw are at 1 p.m. today.

The Riverhounds are on the road this weekend for games against Atlantic Division rivals Charleston Battery (4-3-2) and Atlanta Silverbacks (4-4-1).

"Next weekend, we need to reorganize," Kowalski said. "We need to win, so we will probably have to play with one squad one game and change the lineup significantly for the next."
