UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Despite a disappointing, 2-1 loss to the Long Island Rough Riders (2-1-1, 9 points) last night, the Riverhounds still managed to qualify for the U.S. Open Cup tournament.
It was the first loss of the season for the Riverhounds (3-1-1, 14), who were coming off a three-game winning streak. It is also the first time they have qualified for the U.S. Open Cup.
"I have mixed feelings right now because we did qualify for the Open Cup" said Riverhounds Coach John Kowalski, "but it was a good opportunity for us to earn a win and four or five points, but we let that slip through our hands.
"However, moving on, the Open Cup is a good accomplishment for the franchise and maybe that is the reason we played at times so cautious."
The Riverhounds broke out early with the first goal by Nick Terlecky off the corner kick from Jair Vasquez in the 21st minute. It was Terlecky's second goal of the season and Vasquez's second assist.
Long Island was quick to counter, though, with a goal in the 26th minute by Ben Diallo off a throw-in by Edson Buddle. The game remained tied until the end of the first half.
The Rough Riders came out strong after the intermission and got a goal from Dahir Mohammed in the 50th minute off a corner kick by Gerry Lucey.
"Well, [last night] for 75 minutes of the game we showed up to play around. We played only fifteen minutes with the attitude that we'd like to win the game," said Kowalski.
The Riverhounds' next game is against the Rochester Raging Rhinos at 1:35 p.m. tomorrow at Bethel Park Stadium.
