The Steelers have selected Oregon State wide receiver Markus Wheaton in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

The 5'11 182-pound Wheaton holds the Beavers' all-time record for receptions with 227. Offensive coordinator Todd Haley called Wheaton a "gnarly guy we are really excited about bringing aboard." Wide receiver is another position that was expected to be a high priority for the Steelers in the draft after Mike Wallace Haley praised Wheaton's speed saying that he "can stretch the field. He plays inside-out and is a pretty versatile, good, polished football player at the receiver position." During a teleconference with Pittsburgh media, Wheaton agreed that his versatility is an asset. "I like being all over the place," he said. "The defense can't really plan for you when they don't know where you're going to be."
