Former West Virginia receiver Tavon Austin was selected Thursday by the St. Louis Rams, who traded up to take Austin as the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL draft.

Austin's stock rose dramatically in the weeks since the NFL combine, when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds.

He scored 17 touchdowns for West Virginia last year, but made his biggest splash against Oklahoma accounting for 574 all-purpose yards.

"He's a hard guy to tackle, let alone get a good flush hit on. Electrifying playmaker, a great day for St. Louis," ESPN analyst Jon Gruden said.

St. Louis made a trade with the Buffalo Bills to jump ahead of the New York Jets, which had the No. 9 pick and showed significant interest in Austin.
