Bob Smizik: Shero out; Bylsma still in

The Penguins today fired general manager Ray Shero and said his successor will determine the future of coach Dan Bylsma and his staff.

The announcement was made by team president Dave Morehouse, who was speaking for owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle.

''We haven’t reach the level our ownership wants us to get to and we think a new general manager can help us get there,’’ Morehouse said.

The decision not to fire Bylsma was shocking because his ouster was almost universally expected after the team lost to a lower-seeded opponent for the fifth straight year in the playoffs.

''What we’re trying to do is do it systematically,'' said Morehouse. ''We want to address the situation at the top.’’

Nevertheless, it would be shocking if the new GM does not want to name his own coach and fire Bylsma.
