So I'm standing on the beach at Ocean City, Maryland talking to my son who happens to be wearing a Pirates cap when a guy walks over toward us clearly wanting to say something.

"You guys got Morneau today," he said. "Good luck to the Pirates."

In this era of instant technology, that's how I learned that general manager Neal Huntington upgraded the team once again and once again for a negligible cost.

And also that the Pirates, America's underdog, are on the verge of becoming America's team.

On the verge . . . but not yet there.

Although Garrett Jones had a three-hit night Friday, that doesn't mean the Pirates don't need Morneau. They do. They're a better team today than they were yesterday.

Michael Sanerino has all the details on post-gazette.com.
