Penn State nips Hampton in CBI opener

D.J. Newbill scored 19 points and Penn State (16-17) survived a late surge to defeat Hampton, 69-65, in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational Wednesday at Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pa.

The Pirates (18-13) took a brief two-point lead with 11:17 left in the game, but it was their only lead of the contest.

Hampton pulled within two points on a Deron Powers layup with six seconds left, but Geno Thorpe sealed the victory by sinking a pair of free throws on the other end. Thorpe had 10 points.

Penn State will face Siena (16-17) in the quarterfinals Monday night at Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y.


■ Illinois 66, Boston 62: Rayvonte Rice had 28 points and 8 rebounds as the Illini (20-14), who trailed by as many as 17 points early on, defeated the host Terriers (24-11) in the first round.

■ Louisiana Tech 89, Iona 88: Kenneth Smith's put-back layup with 2.2 seconds left lifted the Bulldogs (28-7) past the visiting Gaels (22-11).

■ Georgia 63, Vermont 56: Charles Mann scored 29 points on 8-of-11 shooting to lead the host Bulldogs (20-13) past the Catamounts (22-11).

■ Southern Mississippi 66, Toledo 59: Michael Craig scored 16 points as the Golden Eagles (27-6) soared past the visiting Rockets (27-6).
