NOTEBOOK
Longtime Penn State observers said it was the most-agitated and angry they have seen Penn State Coach Joe Paterno after a game. Perhaps the only time that rivals it was in 1984, when a 3-7 Pitt team came into Beaver Stadium and beat the Lions, 31-11, in the final game of the season. That prompted him to call his players "a bunch of babies." Yesterday, he merely referred to them as "scared rabbits."
Many of his players said they never saw him that way. "I've been here four years, and I don't think I've ever seen him that angry after a game," S Shawn Mayer said.
"The last time I saw him like this was when we lost the final three games in 1999," RB Larry Johnson said.
Penn State's 23 yards rushing is the third-lowest total under Paterno. The four worst totals have been posted in the past three seasons. They had 30 yards against Toledo last year, 7 against Michigan in 1999 and 6 against USC last year. The 25 rushing attempts are the third-fewest under Paterno.
Wisconsin RB Anthony Davis' 200 yards rushing marked the first time Penn State yielded 200 yards to a back since Sedrick Irvin (238) and Marc Renaud (203) did it for Michigan State in 1997. With QB Brooks Bollinger also running for 112 yards, it marked the first time two players rushed for more than 100 yards in the same game since the Michigan State game in '97.
Penn State opened the season with consecutive losses for a second year in a row. It's the fourth time under Paterno the Lions opened 0-2. They also did it in 1990 and '83. It's the first time they opened consecutive seasons with two losses in a row since '64-65.
The offensive line has given up 12 sacks in the first two games, including eight yesterday. Paterno pulled starting RT Matt Schmitt (Hampton) and used sophomore Chris McKelvy for most of the second half. Senior G Greg Ransom left the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury and did not return. Redshirt freshman Scott Davis took his place and played the rest of the game.
"It was a tough situation for Scott Davis, going in there the first time he's ever played," Paterno said. "I don't have any problems with Scott Davis. He hung in there. I don't have a problem with him. I have a problem with some other guys."
Senneca threw his second career touchdown pass, a 50-yarder to Larry Johnson. Senneca's first career touchdown pass was a 50-yarder to Bryant Johnson against Michigan last year.
As part of the pregame ceremony honoring the victims of the terrorist attacks, Penn State and Wisconsin players lined up on the yard markers for the national anthem, then shook hands before departing to their benches.
