Pitt associate head coach Barry Rohrssen moved up in the pecking order yesterday for the head coaching position at Seton Hall.

Hofstra coach Tom Pecora, the top candidate for the job, pulled his name from consideration yesterday when he agreed to a long-term deal to remain at Hofstra.

Rohrssen, Pitt's top recruiter, and Manhattan coach Bobby Gonzalez are now believed to be the top candidates to replace Louis Orr, who was fired Friday. Rohrssen was at the school yesterday for an interview, and if things went well, he could be in line for the job.

Rohrssen, who could not be reached for comment yesterday, is responsible for bringing in a number of Pitt's top players in recent years, including Chris Taft, Carl Krauser, Ronald Ramon and Levance Fields.

Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said over the weekend that it is a positive for his assistants to be coveted for head coaching positions.

"I want guys who want to be head coaches," Dixon said. "To be a good head coach you have to be a good assistant first. I want our guys looking at head coaching jobs and preparing to be head coaches because that makes them good assistant coaches."
