Of note: Left-hander Felipe Rivero, who threw two scoreless innings Friday, has yet to issue a walk or a run this spring. In seven innings, he has allowed one hit and struck out nine.
News of the day
A few minutes before taking the mound for a 10 a.m. “B” game in Sarasota, Fla., right-hander Trevor Williams discovered the Orioles were not trotting out minor leaguers to face him. The abbreviated lineup instead included Chris Davis, Mark Trumbo, J.J. Hardy and Pedro Alvarez.
Williams threw 66 pitches in four innings. No scores or official stats are kept for “B” games, although Baltimore beat writers reported Alvarez hit a home run and a double off Williams.
“It was nice to work on stuff against those guys without my stats coming up on the bottom ticker [Saturday] morning,” Williams said, smiling. “We accomplished what I wanted to accomplish. … Those are elite major leaguers. It was nice to see how they’re swinging against my stuff. I got them and they got me. It was going back and forth.”
Manager Clint Hurdle said Williams’ fastball and changeup were firm and well-located, his slider was sound, and his curveball was thrown with mixed results, some tight and some loopy.
“A good challenge for him,” Hurdle said. “Especially when you get that lineup thrown at you at 10 o’clock in the morning. That’s a lot. That’s not a ‘B’ game.”
Williams is one of five starters competing for the final two spots in the rotation — right-hander Chad Kuhl is likely to secure one of the two open slots. Williams, 24, has allowed four runs in 7⅔ innings over three Grapefruit League outings. He’s tried to keep his mind off the rotation battle.
“This competition has been good for our entire staff,” he said. “We have the luxury of having more than five great starters that can pitch at the major league level. It's going to be a tough decision for them. I'm glad I play baseball and they make those decisions. It's the nature of the beast.”
