BRADENTON, Fla. — Roll out the red carpet. Right-hander Gerrit Cole, whose Grapefruit League debut had been delayed by a ribcage injury, is scheduled to make his first spring start Sunday when the Detroit Tigers visit McKechnie Field.
Manager Clint Hurdle said Cole is expected to throw two innings against the Tigers.
Cole, 25, was 19-8 with a 2.60 last season. He made his first All-Star Game and finished fourth in National League Cy Young award voting. His last outing was in the National League wild-card game, when he allowed four runs in five innings.
