BRADENTON, Fla. — Right-hander Gerrit Cole is nearing a return to the Pirates spring-training rotation. He threw 37 pitches Monday between an inning of live batting practice and an inning of a simulated game.
"It went well," said Cole, who has been slowed by a ribcage injury. "This is the next step in the process. ... Patience is a learned skill. I feel like the patience is over. I came in just a couple of bullpens behind."
Cole said he used all four pitches and had command. He'll throw another bullpen session Wednesday.

Will he be ready for opening day?
"I hope so," Cole said, "but I’m trying not to jump the gun.”
