Jenn Menendez: Hello. Thanks for joining me. It's about 80 degrees and sunny here in L.A. Let's get started.
Pgh Fan: Jenn, it seems as though the media and fans overlook the awful job the GM has done in his 7 yrs in drafting & developing position players. Neither Cutch nor Walker were drafted by NH. How can any GM keep his job when he only seems to have a clue when developing pitching?
Jon: Cutch Walker Alvarez Mercer Marte Polanco all developed by NH, at least. Is Pgh Fan serious?
Jenn Menendez: You are certainly entitled to your opinion. But there are several prospects on the way up that will fall into that category. And he has developed several.
Jim: Do we see more of Barmes due to his night last night?
Jenn Menendez: Barmes was a machine last night. Went 3-for-4 and scored two key runs. I would say it's possible Hurdle sees that as the hot hand and he stays in the lineup until he's not.
Jim: Austin Meadows isn't the player to be name later in the Davis trade is he? Seems like to a lot to give up.
Jenn Menendez: I have not heard a single definitive thing that would lead me to say that it's him.
Alan Gifford: Did Andrew Lambo play himself out of a future with the Pirates in spring training, outfield and 1st base looked filled for the future now
Jenn Menendez: He played himself out of this season's first base equation, certainly. Davis and Sanchez seem to be working well as a platoon. And his injury didn't help. My guess is that he may have been recalled by now to play some right field and at least get an opportunity to show what he's capable of at the major league level had he not gotten injured.
Robert: Jenn, Do you see Gregory Polanco getting called up within the next couple of weeks?
Jenn Menendez: Probably, yes. But there's a chance it slides later than that even. It's very difficult to predict, even for the team calling up the player.
zivkov34: Who's the next man up Locke? Why not give Worley a shot?
Jenn Menendez: It sounds like Locke is the next in line, yes. I have heard Hurdle mention Worley though, and Huntington as well. And they both constantly point to the fact they used something like 12 different starting pitchers last year, so you should see both of them at some point.
Kevin Humble: I don't see the Pirates breaking .500, or making the NL playoffs. What do you think?
Jenn Menendez: I had my doubts, and one game is just a game, but last night was a team I hadn't seen all year -- so I wouldn't bet the farm against them just yet.
Jon: Jenn, we know the 2015 rotation will have Cole and Morton in it, and Cumpton has a chance to stick. (Locke, too, I suppose.) That seems... bad. Am I missing something?
Jenn Menendez: If there's one area the Pirates are almost assured to make some moves after this season it's with starting pitching. Remember Edinson Volquez coming out of the blue? Also, Taillon will be back in the mix at some point too.
PhillyJake: What's the difference between Liriano '14 and Lirano '13 ?
Jenn Menendez: I've honestly been trying to figure that out myself. At first I thought that groin injury was perhaps worse than the Pirates were letting on, but I've been told repeatedly he's 100 percent. I don't know, so my guess is as good as yours, but I think it could have something to do with pressure he's likely putting on himself.
Britti: What's up with the pirates starters?!? :( their success (number of wins) is semi-disappointing, no?
Jenn Menendez: It certainly is. While win-loss records are certainly not the be-all end-all statistic on a pitcher, but they tend to mean something when they're really good, or really bad.
Alan Gifford: which was the aberration last year, the 1st half Locke or the 2nd half Locke
Jenn Menendez: That's the million dollar question on him, right? i will say that I'm an optimist by nature, so I tend to think that his injury played into his struggles a lot and that he will return to the guy he was.
zivkov34: So whats the latest speculation on the PTBNL in the Davis trade?
Jenn Menendez: Don't have any, sorry.
Barry: What is up with Jeanmar Gomez?
Jenn Menendez: Just flat out struggled the other night. Came into a clean inning after the team had rallied back to tie the game and gave up a couple of runs. The bullpen seems to be back in order now, so maybe knowing his role as the long reliever will help him. ??
zivkov34: If the Pirates fall out of contention, does Liriano have any trade value?
Jenn Menendez: I'd say so. A good lefty will always have value. But how much, not sure.
PhillyJake: I think Locke was a double aberration last year. He wasn't as good as hist first half, and I think his second half was marred by injuries. I think he can be a 12 game winner with an ERA around 4. What say you ?
Jenn Menendez: I think that is probably a rational and fair assessment.
zivkov34: When Polanco comes up is Snider the odd man out? Tabata is serviceable, and is owed now what seems like a lot of money. If he can't be traded and is DFA'd someone would likely take a chance at him on waivers wouldn't they?
Jenn Menendez: No way to know obviously, until it happens. But as I've said before, yes, Snider seems* to be a high probability candidate to be the odd man out.
tim m: moving forward the short stop position once thought to be stable seems like anything but, do you see the pirates making a move this year to solidify it through a trade at some point?
Jenn Menendez: I'm not sure I do. They've been really patient with Jordy Mercer, and I've not seen any indications they don't plan to continue to be.
JJ: Hey Jenn! I dont know if I asked this question before but when is Polonco Super 2 date?
Jenn Menendez: Truly, calculating the Super 2 date is difficult. That's why you haven't seen anyone write a specific date.
PhillyJake: With the Pirates losing, perhaps they hold off with Polanco until next year?
Jenn Menendez: I think there would be riots in the streets if that happened.
Jenn Menendez: Alright, well thanks for joining me folks. Bill Brink will be chatting from San Diego early next week.
